On monday night we were all sat in our back garden (which is tiny by the way!) and I got my gear out to mess around. Took some photos of Jodie in about 2 minutes! It was a very similar setup to the portrait of took of Jonny. It was a shoot that literally only lasted 2/3 minutes, but it was fun! Good to get the camera gear out whenever you can!

On the 28th May 2009 my friend and housemate Jonny Hines took part in a road cycling race in Exeter. The race took place before the “Tour of Britain” race. He asked me to come along to take some pictures of him racing - however it turned out that due to my complete lack of experience in any sports/action photography they didn’t turn out very well at all… So I made my way home and when he arrived back at the house later that evening I suggested we do some portraits of him - he agreed.

As it was quite late at night we went out in the back garden and I set up my two speedlights.

One SB600 camera left, through a white umbrella set at 1/4 power,
one SB600 camera right bare, 1/16 power.

I set my camera to manual mode and used a 1/200th shutter speed (as that’s the sync speed of my camera). I then took some test shots and closed down my aperture until I was happy with the lighting; f/8.0.

I took a few snaps of him and they looked pretty cool! As I’m in the middle of university exams currently I didn’t have much time to edit etc so all I did in photoshop was some desaturation of certain colours and some sharpening.

I started photography around March 2008 when I bought a Nikon D40 with the intention of shooting concerts. If I’m honest the idea of getting into concerts for free appealed to me! The concerts were going well but eventually I hit a bit of a brick wall - my D40 just had too much noise for gig photography. So around Christmas 2008 I upgraded to a Nikon D90. My equipment list is currently:

Nikon D90
2 x Nikon SB600’s
2 x Light stands
2 x Gadget Infinity radio triggers
2 x White shoot through 40″ umbrellas
Lowepro Mini-Trekker AW

I use Sandisk memory cards and have Photoshop CS3 installed on a Apple MacBook 13″.

The gigs are still going well (although I haven’t done many recently due to university being very busy!) and I’m also expanding into other areas of photography now - so keep checking back!

I’ll start to post some photography-related junk up on here soon!

Mike.
